a new jolt of energy

In the last three weeks my love for film photography has been renewed. What I have found is something that lets me explore and create in new ways that will give me more energy and creative juice that I have been looking for.

Since the end of last semester (December) I haven’t taken a single photo with my digital camera. The combination of work and other things in life kept me away from it. When the new semester started and I began my course in Alternative/Creative Photography my urge to go out started to return. Although the class is less focused about assignments were I go out and take photographs to meet the assignment topic, I still had the urge to find a new way to take photos. The class was mostly about altering photographs and doing things to give what is out there new life and a different way of viewing. This idea lead me to find Lomography.

The aspect of it intrigued me. Just take a camera everywhere and shoot anything. The idea of “don’t think” pretty much voids every rule I have learned thus far. I remembered that I pretty much broke the rules in many of my photographs anyway so I continued checking it out. Then I saw images from the Holga, Diana, and Lomo LC-A. They pulled me. The graphic nature and lo-fi aspects appealed to me greatly. It made me want to see what I could come up with, so I bought myself a Holga 135.

Normally the Holga is a 120 film but since there are basically zero professional labs to develop aside from the Bay Area I decided to go with the 35mm version for the ease of it. With it I got a pack of color film, something I never shot with before. All my previous film shots have been on true black and white film, which you can’t develop at any store photo lab. After I submitted my order online I could not wait for it to come. I kept looking at other photos to get ideas until it finally came.

The day I got it I played around with it, getting used to the controls (which are simplistic at first glance but take some getting used to). Sadly it came too late in the day so I had to wait a few extra days for the next day off so I could fully go out with it. When I did I snapped off a full roll and dropped it off to Costco. I was anxious to get the film back with the CD. It reminded me of being the in darkroom and developing the black and white film while printing the photos. After an hour I picked it up and was ecstatic to see the results. I was surprised the kinds of stuff came out and the overall look of it. The whole thing gave me extra energy and passion for it. A week or so later and I was out with a second roll shooting some urban photographs.

Now I have a black and white roll in the camera. It’s not a true black and white (although I have a few of those laying around) but I want to see what comes from it. I am excited to get out and shoot. Lomography has given me a new love of film and I can’t wait to see where it will take me.

cleaning out the dust

As much as I try to keep everything up to date it becomes harder and harder. Things seem to get in the way. Lately life has been busy (as usual). Work and school tear apart my weeks. Days are mere hours long. I can’t believe it is March already. I hope things begin to mellow out. There are many things I want to go out and do but no time to do them unfortunately.

School is doing okay for the most part. History is still boring as hell. Math is math. Psychology is hit and miss, especially since I am prone to dozing off now and then. The only entertaining class is my creative photography class which always brings something new to the table. It’s my most looked forward to class of the week. Still sad it is only one day a week though.

As for work, well it has been hectic as of late. Had a few weeks of epic shifts and now things are finally starting to calm down but with call-ins and crazy photo sales it still spikes now and then. I just try and stay positive but even that is testing me.

We’ll see if I can update this thing on a timely basis.

like the flash of a camera

Thought I would throw up a small update. The new photography class is pretty sweet. Been doing different things each Saturday so far. It is my most looked forward to class. Needs to be on more days. Good new crew we have this time.

That is all for now.

the gears have begun moving again

It’s that time of the year. School has returned for a sixth semester. This time it’s mostly book related crap that I’ll forget in probably three weeks. Time a little situation sit down and brief on this semester’s classes.

History – American History to 1877

First off, what is so important about 1877? I guess I’ll find out. Anyway, the class is seated in alphabetical order which is stupid because this is college, not elementary school. The professor has an annoying voice that drones during lectures. Today was the second day of class and we watched some boring late 80′s/early 90′s video about Columbus finding this wonderful land and how he fucked over the Native Americans. After that was notes that I slept through.

Math – Intermediate Algebra

I finally decided to give this class another try after god knows how long. The teacher is decent looking although she told us she can be a bitch. The book situation pisses me off and I had to pay more than $100 for a stupid code to use online to be able to do my homework. Stupid. It’s math, what do you expect it to be?

Psychology – Intro to Psychology

The professor is German which means she has the accent that all stereotypical therapists have. The one day I have had this class so far had me nodding off towards the end (I blame the lame Power Point presentation). This is the only class out of the others that has at least one person I know (not including photography because that is obvious that I know people). Seems like an interesting class though.

Photography – Creative Photography

I start this tomorrow and am excited. Shame it is only one day a week but it will give me time to do my projects during my hectic school/work schedule. WHOO!

That’s about it for now. I will TRY and actually get around to updating this more. Hopefully.

creating work to push forward

In my hunt to become a better photographer I have set a goal for myself. No professors or grades to judge or critique me. This will be all me. No rules. No instructions.

My plan is to create a photography book to act as a portfolio of sorts and to test my skills as a photographer. For the content I will plan out a theme (which is TBD as of right now). The number of pictures will be either thirty or sixty depending on how strong the subject it. I feel this will push what I  have learned to the limits and give me a worthy challenge that will let me work at my own pace and prepare things as needed. I guess I could say that the deadline is Summer ’10. That gives me just over half a year to work on this. I am ready for this great challenge. For now I just need to make sure my gear is in good shape which means cleaning the lenses and filters, along with getting a new tripod (which I hope to have by next semester).

Expect updates on my progress.

shred the rubber

Last few days have been pretty typical. Classes are starting to wrap up which means all the last minute work needs to get done. My digital photography class starts it’s presentations tomorrow. I have mine ready for display. I am hoping for a somewhat decent grade to top off the class (which should be fairly easy). The professional photography class ends on Saturday (after one last regular class on Thursday). Still working on the final for that class. Going super last minute with it which isn’t too good but there isn’t anything I can do to help that. The project I laid out is much harder than I thought it would be and the current weather is not helping as I try and finish it up. I am crossing my fingers.

English is still a bore. He is still throwing daily quizzes at us and then the final will be next Thursday. Supposedly in class essay on some secret topic. I am really hoping I pass that class, along with political science. As for political science, my group was supposed to present our semester project today but time ran out so we have to present (and shorten) our presentation for Wednesday. Should go smoothly. The final is a multiple choice test next Wednesday. I like those kind.

Not much else to talk about really. The only notable thing is that I have been playing Forza 3 (hence the title). Driving like an asshole pays off like it should. Other than that, nothing else is special in the land of me. All I can say is that I could use my paycheck. Three more days.

recovering from a barrage of batterings

The last week and a half have been beating me down. Most of it was due to coming down with the flu. Hit me last Friday and held me in its awful grip for most of the week. I managed to hold the fort and take some photographs at the nearby creek for an assignment. It was risky as I was running a pretty good fever and burning up while trying to stay warm with the chills. Not something I’m likely to do again. Being sick has caused me to miss some class and work but hopefully by this coming weekend everything will be good. At least that is what my oh-so-not-helpful doctor said.

As far as other things are concerned life has been treating me fairly typical aside from a few things. Life loves to throw me curve balls and all I can to is keep taking them to the face, leaving me dazed and confused as to where to go. Kind of a depressing thought. It also doesn’t help when after hearing news of something not too great that sad music comes on next during a shuffle of your music library. Thanks Zune, that really was oh-so-helpful.

the sensor, give it POWAH

Things be the same old routine as of late. Nothing of great importance to report. I put up some more photographs on the Deviantart account I have had since forever. Probably later this week I will get around to updated my actual site to show the photos I took this last week. I am also working on a more professional template for a proper portfolio but plan to keep the regular photo page up. We’ll see how that goes.

Tomorrow I  have to do a last minute shoot for a project for Tuesday. Hopefully things go without a hitch. I also have to great a card for another assignment. Not too hard. Eventually I have to get working on some other assignments. Two of them are final projects and another involves me to go to a city with tall buildings. I really want to get down to San Francisco for that one, but if I do I would like someone to come with me so I at least have company.

That’s about it for today. Work tonight and then my relaxing days tomorrow and (sort of) Tuesday. I need to beat Dragon Age: Origins.

spirit of the season!?

I figured this time would come. Both of my photography classes are having me do holiday assignments for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Obviously the calendar has become stale and we moved the holidays to October. Oh well, now I get to figure out how to incorporate these holidays in to my photos without houses dressed up for them. Yeah. One of the assignments is a Christmas type postcard. I have a few ideas but I doubt anyone will want to go through with it for me (well maybe). Not to worry though as I have a backup idea or two. Then I get to think of my final projects and another assignment that deals with skyscrapers, something I have to drive 30-50 minutes each way to see. Stupid small cities.

on a rain delay

This week has started off pretty wet. Quick storm rolling through which I wasn’t expecting. I was hoping to finish up some photo assignments for class but with this wacky weather I can’t do much unfortunately. Hopefully tomorrow goes to plan (according to Weather.com) so I can finish up the two that I have for this week.

Other than that I haven’t done much today. Fairly slow. Class flew by faster than usual which I won’t complain about. Just been sitting around for the most part. The weekend wasn’t something to write home about either. Standard class and work combo. This week should follow that and just flow by.

I am also going to try and get some new content on my photography page. There are a few sets I have taken that haven’t been sorted through yet but once I do new stuff should be uploaded for your viewing pleasure.

Now to find something to do.
